What Is the NHS’s Zero-Tolerance Policy?

An aggressive male patient shouts at a receptionist

The NHS's zero-tolerance policy is its stated commitment that violence, abuse, and harassment towards staff will not be accepted, whether that's physical aggression, swearing and verbal abuse, racist or sexual comments, or persistent unreasonable demands that cause staff serious distress.

In practice, it gives staff and services a clear basis for acting immediately: ending a phone call or appointment, calling the police where an assault or threat has occurred, or in GP settings, removing a patient from the practice list, with alternative care arranged afterwards.

It's the stated principle rather than a single operational procedure - how it's actually applied day to day still varies by trust and setting, which is what our guide to NHS policy on aggressive patients covers in more detail. Training staff to recognise unacceptable behaviour and respond confidently and proportionately is usually delivered as part of a wider conflict management programme.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

Engaging PowerPoint, really good instructors, time to practice techniques

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
