What Is the NHS Policy for Dealing With Aggressive Patients?

An aggressive male patient shouts at a receptionist

There's no single NHS-wide policy, each trust and practice sets its own.

Most follow the same underlying principles though: de-escalation first, a documented process for logging incidents, a clear point at which security or police involvement becomes appropriate, and - for GP practices specifically - the option to remove a patient from the practice list via the Special Allocation Scheme in genuinely persistent cases.

NHS England and NHS Employers both publish guidance trusts are expected to build local policy around, covering staff training, reporting, and support after an incident.

The common thread across all of it: staff shouldn't be expected to "just deal with it" as part of the job, and a policy only works if staff have actually been trained in what it asks of them, not just handed a document to read - which is exactly what our Conflict Management & Personal Safety course is built to do.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
