What Is Positive Handling in Schools?

A female student raises her hand to ask a question in a classroom

Positive handling is the term used in UK education settings for a graduated, least-intrusive approach to managing challenging behaviour - ranging from supportive physical guidance through to, where genuinely necessary, physical intervention to keep a pupil or those around them safe.

It sits alongside a school's statutory duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and DfE guidance on reasonable force, and rests on one core principle: any physical response should be the last resort, proportionate to the risk, and used for the shortest time possible.

In practice, this means staff are trained to de-escalate first, assess risk continuously, and only use physical techniques that are safe, proportionate, and properly documented afterwards.

What are positive handling techniques?

Positive handling techniques cover a graduated range rather than a single set of holds, and the lower end is where most of the work happens.

At the least intrusive end: proximity and positioning, calm verbal redirection, offering choices, and giving a pupil space and time to settle. In the middle: supportive physical guidance - a hand on a shoulder, or guiding a pupil by the arm away from a flashpoint. At the upper end, and only where risk genuinely warrants it: restrictive physical intervention, held for the shortest time necessary and recorded afterwards.

The sequencing matters as much as the techniques. Staff trained only in the upper end will reach for it sooner, because it's the only tool they've been given.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
