What Happens if a Student Assaults a Teacher in the UK?
Schools have a legal duty under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 to protect staff from foreseeable harm, so an assault on a teacher must be recorded, investigated, and followed up, not treated as something the teacher simply absorbs.
The school should carry out a risk assessment, review what led to the incident, and give the affected staff member proper support.
On the pupil's side, the headteacher can impose a sanction under the school's behaviour policy, up to and including suspension or permanent exclusion, depending on severity and the pupil's individual circumstances.
For more serious assaults, the school can and sometimes must involve the police - assault is a criminal offence regardless of the perpetrator's age, though how it's handled differs for younger pupils below the age of criminal responsibility.
Underlying all of this is whether the school's systems - reporting, risk assessment, staff training - were adequate before the incident happened, not just how it's handled afterwards.
