What are five characteristics of an aggressive person?

Two men face each other in an animated discussion with gesturing hands while others look on in an indoor setting

Recognising the signs early gives staff time to act before a situation escalates into something harder to manage.

Five characteristics show up consistently in aggressive behaviour:

  1. A raised or clipped tone of voice that sharpens rather than settles;
  2. Tense, closed body language such as clenched fists, squared shoulders, or a fixed stare;
  3. Invading personal space, often a step closer than the conversation calls for;
  4. Fixating on one grievance and repeating it louder instead of hearing a response;
  5. And escalating rapidly from a minor trigger, with little build-up in between.

None of these signs alone guarantees a situation will turn physical, but two or three together are a reliable early cue worth acting on. None of these signs alone guarantees a situation will turn physical, but two or three together are a reliable early cue worth acting on. The Betari Box model explains why that escalation happens, and why the way you respond can redirect it just as fast.

Staff who can read these signals are better placed to shut down an aggressive person calmly, before things intensify further.

Stand2's de-escalation training is built around developing this early recognition through realistic scenario-based practice.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
