What are some signs of aggressive behaviour?

Aggressive man yelling at nurse in clinic

Aggression rarely appears without any warning at all.

Watch for a raised or sharpened tone of voice, tense posture such as a clenched jaw, squared shoulders, or someone stepping into your personal space uninvited.

Restless movement - pacing, fidgeting, or repeatedly checking the exit - is another common early cue, as is verbal signalling: sarcasm, veiled threats, or the same grievance repeated louder each time it's raised.

Eye contact often shifts too, either intensifying into a fixed stare or disappearing altogether as the person disengages from the conversation.

None of these signs is conclusive on its own, but two or three appearing together is a reliable early indicator worth slowing the interaction down for. These cues rarely exist in isolation - they're often the visible half of Betari's Box, the attitude-behaviour cycle already running between you and the other person.

Knowing how to respond to aggressive behaviour starts with catching these cues before they build further.

Stand2's Managing Challenging Behaviour Training trains staff to spot these signals early and respond with confidence.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

Engaging PowerPoint, really good instructors, time to practice techniques

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
