How Do You Deal With an Abusive Caller on the Phone?

Call center

Stay calm, speak slightly slower than usual, and keep sentences short.

Without the visual cues you'd have in person, tone of voice and pacing carry almost all the weight - matching an angry caller's pace or volume tends to make things worse, not better.

Give a clear, polite warning that the call will end if the abuse continues - then follow through consistently if it doesn't stop.

This protects staff without needing to argue or justify the decision in the moment. Logging the call afterwards matters too, both for identifying patterns of repeat behaviour from the same caller and for supporting the member of staff who took it.

This is a trainable skill, not just a personality trait some people happen to have - which is exactly what our Managing Challenging Telephone Calls course is built around.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
