How Should I Handle Aggressive Customers?
The core de-escalation steps are the same whichever direction the aggression is coming from - stay calm, give space, use short clear language.
What's different with a customer is the decision layered on top: whether to keep trying to resolve their issue, or draw a line and refuse service, which most staff have more legal room to do than they assume.
Customer-facing roles are also more often lone-facing in the moment - a till, a reception desk, a phone line - without a colleague immediately on hand the way an office or warehouse team might have, which makes knowing your own exit and escalation route in advance more important.
There's a visibility factor too: it often plays out in front of other customers, adding pressure to resolve it fast rather than correctly.
Stand2's Managing Challenging Behaviour Training for Customer Service Teams is built around exactly this combination - see also how to respond to aggressive behaviour generally.
