Is It Ever Appropriate to Hang Up on an Abusive Caller?

abusive telephone caller

Yes - ending a call with an abusive caller is standard, accepted practice, and most UK workplace policies explicitly allow it. The condition almost every policy attaches is a clear warning first: telling the caller exactly what needs to stop, and that the call will end if it doesn't - never disconnecting silently or without explanation.

A typical sequence: name the specific behaviour ("I need you to stop swearing at me"), give one clear warning that the call will end if it continues, then follow through calmly if it doesn't. Local authority telephone policies generally require exactly this - staff are permitted to terminate abusive calls, provided the caller was given a genuine chance to moderate their behaviour first.

What happens after matters too - most policies expect the call to be logged and reported to a manager, both to protect the staff member and to flag repeat callers.

Our Managing Challenging Telephone Calls course covers this boundary directly - not just staying calm on the call, but knowing when continuing the call is no longer the right response.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
