What Should You Never Do During De-escalation?

An angry guest gestures while complaining to two hotel staff members at a reception desk

During de-escalation, the biggest risks often come from small, natural reactions rather than obvious mistakes. Raising your voice, arguing back, or trying to win the point all tend to match the other person's energy rather than lower it. Closed body language, such as folded arms or pointing, can also read as confrontational.

Personal space matters too. The National Protective Security Authority (NPSA) advises maintaining a safe distance and avoiding being alone with someone who is combative, rather than moving closer to try to calm them down. Non-verbal signals like posture and tone often carry more weight than the words used, part of what the PALMS model of communication is built around.

Just as important is knowing your limits. NPSA guidance is clear that if a situation carries a real risk of violence, the right response is to disengage and seek help, not to keep attempting de-escalation regardless - a skill Stand2's Level 1 de-escalation training is built to develop.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
