What is the most common cause of challenging behaviour?

a conversation taking place with challenging behaviour

Challenging behaviour is rarely random - in most cases, it's a response to an unmet need, frustration, or a feeling of lost control.

Common causes include:

  • Communication difficulties - struggling to express needs or distress in words
  • Unmet needs - hunger, pain, fatigue, or lack of routine
  • Environmental stress - noise, crowding, or long waiting times
  • Fear or loss of control - feeling threatened, powerless, or unheard
  • Underlying health or emotional distress - conditions that make self-regulation harder in the moment

Staff don't need to diagnose the exact cause in the moment. What matters is recognising that almost all challenging behaviour has a trigger - and that early recognition is what allows for a calm, proportionate response rather than a reactive one.

This is the foundation of Stand2's Managing Challenging Behaviour Training, which builds the skills to spot these triggers early and respond safely.

Once you can recognise these triggers, the next step is knowing how to respond - see how to deal with challenging behaviour at work for practical de-escalation steps.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
