What Is an Example of a Physical Intervention?

Grabbing a man from behind during training

A simple example of a physical intervention is a staff member gently guiding someone by the elbow away from a hazard. At the more restrictive end, it might mean using an approved manual hold to stop someone harming themselves or others. Physical intervention covers a spectrum, from light supportive contact through to restraint, and which one is appropriate depends entirely on the level of risk in front of you.

Non-restrictive examples

  • Guiding: a hand on the elbow or shoulder to lead someone away from a dangerous or escalating situation.
  • Blocking: standing in a doorway or pathway to prevent someone moving toward risk, without any physical contact at all.
  • Assisting: offering a steadying hand or helping someone who is distressed to sit or stand safely.

Restrictive examples

  • Manual restraint: holding a person's arms to prevent violent or self-harming behaviour, using the minimum force necessary.
  • Escorting under control: a supported hold used to move someone away from immediate danger when guiding alone isn't sufficient.

Not every restrictive example is straightforward and some sit in a genuinely higher-risk category. See restrictive physical interventions for what separates a restrictive intervention from the examples above.

What separates safe practice from risk isn't the technique itself, but the training behind it. Our physical intervention training covers this full spectrum - medically reviewed, legally defensible, and built around the specific risks your staff actually face.
