What Are the Main Risks of Lone Working in Healthcare?

Worker listening

For healthcare staff specifically, the risks NHS Employers and the RCN both flag come down to a few recurring themes: verbal and physical aggression from patients, clients or family members; medical emergencies happening to the staff member themselves with no one nearby to help; the practical difficulty of getting fast support mid-visit; and the less obvious risk of unpredictable environments.

A home visit means walking into a situation you don't fully control, unlike a ward.

Fatigue and the cumulative stress of consistently working unsupported also compound the more visible risks over time, which is why lone-working policy is treated as an ongoing management responsibility, not a box ticked once during induction.

None of this means lone working in healthcare is unmanageable, it means it needs deliberate risk assessment and real training behind it, not just a phone and a check-in rota, which is what our Lone Worker Safety course provides.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
