What are the 5 steps to deal with challenging behaviour?
A structured response is more reliable than relying on instinct in the moment. A simple 5-step framework:
- Recognise the early signs - tension, frustration, or distress usually build before behaviour becomes challenging
- Manage your own response first - staying calm is what makes the next steps possible
- Communicate clearly and calmly - short, non-confrontational language, without arguing
- Offer space, time, or choices where appropriate, rather than forcing a confrontation
- Report and reflect afterwards - so patterns are identified and future incidents are less likely
This isn't the only structured model used in frontline settings - see our breakdown of PALMS, LEAPS, and other conflict communication frameworks for a deeper look at the verbal techniques behind step 3.
Stand2's Managing Challenging Behaviour Training puts this framework into practice through realistic scenarios.
