What Are the 5 Steps of De-escalation?

a conflict between an angry man and a shop worker

Most de-escalation frameworks - including the one behind our own training - boil down to a similar sequence: stay calm yourself first, since matching someone's agitation almost always escalates it further; listen and acknowledge what they're saying, even if you disagree with it; keep your language simple and your instructions clear, avoiding anything that sounds like an argument; give the person space, both physically and in the conversation, rather than crowding or rushing them; and know your exit - recognise early when a situation needs a second person, a change of location, or a step back rather than continued one-on-one engagement.

The steps are simple to list and genuinely hard to execute under real pressure, which is why this is trained as a practical skill rather than handed over as a checklist. Our Managing Challenging & Aggressive Behaviour course builds all five into realistic scenario practice.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

Engaging PowerPoint, really good instructors, time to practice techniques

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
