What Are the 5 C’s of Security Guards?

Back view of two security guards wearing high-visibility yellow vests with SECURITY printed on them

The 5 C's in security are:

Communication, Cautiousness, Confidence, Courage, and Compassion.

The five qualities that come up consistently across security industry training as the foundation of effective guarding, beyond whatever's covered in a licence.

  1. Communication means clear, calm instructions that de-escalate rather than provoke.
  2. Cautiousness is staying alert to risk without becoming reactive.
  3. Confidence allows a guard to act decisively under pressure.
  4. Courage means stepping into a situation that needs managing, even when it's uncomfortable.
  5. Compassion keeps the person on the other side of an incident treated with dignity, not just controlled.

None of these replace legal knowledge or physical skills - they're the behavioural layer that determines whether those other skills get applied well or badly in the moment.

Stand2's Managing Challenging Behaviour training builds these qualities directly into practical, scenario-based skills.

Explore Stand2's full range of security and enforcement sector training to see how these skills fit into a wider programme for security teams.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

Very good! Other security companys should learn this Easy to learn

Engaging PowerPoint, really good instructors, time to practice techniques

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
