What Are Breakaway Techniques?
Breakaway techniques are the specific physical movements used to release yourself from a grab, hold, or restraint - things like a wrist grab, a clothing grab, or someone grabbing your hair or arm. They're built on leverage and positioning rather than strength, so age, size, and fitness level don't really limit how effective they are.
The techniques themselves are only part of it. Good training also covers reading the warning signs that a grab might be coming, and the judgement to know when to disengage and step back rather than continuing to try and manage a situation physically.
At Stand2, breakaway techniques are taught as one part of a wider conflict management and breakaway training programme, alongside the conflict management training that covers de-escalation and risk assessment more broadly.
