Is It Illegal to Work in Security Without an SIA Licence?

A security team watching over CCTV surveillance monitors with green screen.

It depends on the role - for most security work, yes, but there's a significant exception for in-house staff.

If you're employed directly by the company you're protecting, rather than supplied by a security contractor, you generally don't need an SIA licence at all - GOV.UK confirms this in-house exemption directly. The main carve-outs from that exemption are door supervision and vehicle immobilisation, which require a licence regardless of who employs the guard.

For contracted security, working without the correct licence for that specific activity is a criminal offence, risking prosecution for both the individual and the company that deployed them. In short, yes - an SIA licence is a legal requirement for most contracted security work.

Licensing confirms someone's been vetted and trained to a baseline. It says nothing about how they'll actually handle a real incident - that's what proper conflict management training is for.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
