Can a Security Guard Ask to Look in Your Bag?

Crowd Safety

Yes, a security guard can ask to look in your bag - but they have no legal power to search it without your consent.

Private security in the UK carries none of the statutory search powers the police have; a guard can request a look, but if you say no, they cannot open your bag, go through it, or physically stop you leaving with it.

Refusal has a consequence, though, and it's a common source of confusion: as a condition of entry, a property owner - and their security team acting on that owner's behalf - can refuse you entry, or ask you to leave, if you won't allow a bag check.

That's not a search power, it's the same right any shop or venue has to control who's on their premises, simply delegated to the guard on site.

It's a separate question from the wider legal powers security guards have day to day, which don't extend to compelling a search under any circumstances.

Stand2's Conflict Management & Personal Safety training covers how to handle a refusal calmly and lawfully, without it turning into confrontation.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
