Are Security Guards Allowed to Touch You in the UK?

Yes - but only in specific, legally justified situations, not as a general power that comes with the job.

A security guard can lawfully touch you in three circumstances: using reasonable force to prevent a crime or assist a citizen's arrest, physically removing you from private property once you've refused to leave, or restraining you briefly while detaining you for an offence you've actually committed.

Outside those situations, touching someone - grabbing an arm, blocking a doorway, pushing - is not covered by any special power, and a guard doing so is exposed to the same assault law as anyone else.

What it doesn't include matters just as much: no touching to conduct a search (that requires your consent), no touching on suspicion alone, and no physical contact simply because someone is being difficult or argumentative.

The test that applies every time is the same one that covers all of a guard's wider legal powers: was the contact necessary and proportionate to the situation?

Stand2's Conflict Management & Personal Safety training covers exactly where that line sits, so guards can act with confidence rather than guesswork.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
