How do you handle difficult or aggressive individuals in a professional manner?

a conflict between an angry man and a shop worker

Professionalism under pressure comes down to a handful of consistent habits rather than one clever technique.

Stay calm rather than matching the other person's energy - your tone sets the pace of the whole interaction, whether it settles or escalates.

Listen before instructing; people de-escalate faster once they feel genuinely heard, even if you can't immediately give them what they want.

Set boundaries clearly and calmly, without apologising for them and without turning them into a threat.

Recognise early when a situation needs a second person involved rather than persisting solo, and write up what happened afterwards while the details are still fresh.

These habits hold regardless of setting - reception desk, phone line, or site visit - but they're easiest to apply once you know some signs of aggressive behaviour to watch for in the first place.

Stand2's de-escalation training builds these skills through structured, scenario-based practice.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

Engaging PowerPoint, really good instructors, time to practice techniques

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
