What Are the 5 C’s of Conflict?
The 5 C's of conflict is a framework commonly used to structure how workplace disagreements are approached:
- Clarify what the actual disagreement is about, rather than assuming;
- Communicate openly and without blame;
- Compromise where a middle ground genuinely exists;
- Collaborate to find a solution that works for everyone involved;
- Commit to whatever's agreed, rather than letting the same issue resurface unresolved.
It's a useful starting point for everyday workplace friction, but it assumes both parties are willing and able to engage calmly - which isn't always the case when a situation is already escalating. For that, a more structured model is often needed.
Are there any more Conflict Resolution Strategies?
Once the 5 C's alone aren't enough, conflict resolution strategies typically add active listening, managing body language and tone, and knowing when to pause rather than push for an immediate outcome. The right strategy depends on how far things have already escalated - the 5 C's suit calm disagreements, but a heated situation needs a genuine de-escalation approach, not just conflict resolution language.
