What not to do when dealing with challenging behaviour?

Two people engaged in a focused conversation while seated across from each other in an office or clinic setting

Getting it wrong in the moment can escalate a situation that might otherwise have settled on its own. A few common mistakes to avoid:

  • Don't raise your voice or match their tone - mirroring frustration tends to escalate it further
  • Don't argue or try to "win" - the goal is de-escalation, not being right
  • Don't dismiss or minimise how they're feeling - even if the reaction seems disproportionate to you
  • Don't take it personally - challenging behaviour is rarely really about you
  • Don't make promises you can't keep just to end the interaction quickly
  • Don't manage serious risk alone - know when to withdraw and get support rather than pushing through

These aren't instinctive responses under pressure - which is exactly why structured training matters. Stand2's Managing Challenging Behaviour Training builds these skills through realistic, scenario-based practice. Paired with how to deal with challenging behaviour at work, this covers both sides of the same situation.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

Engaging PowerPoint, really good instructors, time to practice techniques

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
