What Happens if You’re Abusive on a Plane in the UK?

A photo of passengers on an aircraft

It's a criminal offence. Threatening or abusive language, refusing to follow crew instructions, or interfering with cabin crew duties can lead to arrest, and depending on what actually happened, charges ranging from assault to public order offences or specific civil aviation breaches. Being drunk on an aircraft is its own offence, carrying a fine of up to £5,000 and up to two years' imprisonment.

In practice, most incidents don't reach a courtroom - they're managed onboard by cabin crew trained through programmes like our Managing Challenging & Aggressive Behaviour course for transport staff, using warnings and de-escalation long before police ever need to meet the aircraft. But the legal exposure is real, and it's rising up the agenda: the UK government is currently discussing a national blacklist for abusive passengers with the airline industry, which would share a passenger's ban across every UK carrier rather than just the one that removed them - closing the loophole where a banned passenger simply books with someone else. It's still a proposal, not yet law.

Not every incident looks the same, though - aviation uses a specific framework to classify how serious a situation actually is.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
