What Are the Risks of Lone Working for Transport Staff?

Passengers walking along the platform at a train station

The main risks are violence or aggression from the public, medical emergencies with no one nearby to help, and slow access to support if something goes wrong mid-shift or mid-route. Fatigue and stress from unsociable hours compound all three.

Transport roles carry these pressures more than most: drivers, conductors and depot staff are frequently working without a colleague physically present - at night, in remote locations, or dealing directly with the public with no one else immediately on hand.

HSE guidance on lone working, and its guidance on violence and aggression at work, both apply directly to this environment.

None of this means lone working is unmanageable - it means it needs a deliberate risk assessment and the right training, rather than being left to whoever happens to be on shift that day.

That raises the obvious practical question: is a lone-working risk assessment actually a legal requirement?

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
