How Do Bus Drivers Deal With a Difficult or Aggressive Passenger?

A London bus with a lone driver

The safest response is usually the least dramatic one: stay calm, keep your voice level, and avoid matching the passenger's tone.

Trained drivers are taught to use clear, simple instructions rather than debating or reasoning with someone who's already agitated - arguing rarely de-escalates, it usually raises the temperature.

If the situation doesn't settle, the next step is disengagement, not confrontation: stopping in a safe location, opening the doors, and creating distance is almost always preferable to any kind of physical response.

Radioing the depot or control room early - rather than waiting until things have already escalated - gives colleagues and, where needed, the police a head start.

None of this is instinctive under pressure. It's a trained skill, built through repetition of specific techniques: reading early warning signs, controlled language, and safe disengagement. That's exactly what our Managing Challenging Behaviour course for transport staff covers.

None of this means a driver is expected to act as security or police, though - see where a driver's responsibility for passenger safety actually starts and stops.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

I recently completed training at Stand2 and had a great experience. The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
