Case Study

London Ambulance Service

The Challenge
London presents one of the most complex operational environments for emergency medical professionals in the UK. Crews regularly work in crowded transport hubs, nightlife districts, large public events, and densely populated residential areas, encountering verbal abuse, aggressive behaviour, and unpredictable situations on a daily basis. These high-pressure conditions often require paramedics to make rapid, risk-based decisions while maintaining their clinical responsibilities and duty of care. Amid a broader national transition to the NHS National Syllabus for Conflict Resolution, London Ambulance Service (LAS) identified a gap: off-the-shelf training did not adequately reflect the realities of providing emergency care in a high-pressure urban environment, where multi-agency responses, public scrutiny, and environmental pressures intensify the risks associated with conflict.

Why Stand2 Was Chosen
Stand2 was appointed for its specialist expertise in the ambulance sector and its 20-year track record supporting NHS ambulance trusts across the UK. LAS needed a provider who could embed NHS standards while tailoring content to the unique challenges of London’s frontline emergency care. Stand2’s approach incorporated sector-specific risk assessment, evidence-based communication models, non-pain-compliant clinical intervention techniques, and real-world scenarios, ensuring that training was immediately applicable. The trust valued Stand2’s ability to deliver scalable, sustainable training that aligned with operational and clinical safety requirements.

What Training Was Delivered
Stand2 delivered a bespoke Advanced Conflict Management & Clinical Holding programme focused on the pressures of the London environment. Clinicians were trained in rapid threat assessment in public spaces, managing aggression in confined or challenging locations such as ambulances, buses and houses, and maintaining professional control under high-stress conditions. De-escalation techniques were embedded within multi-agency contexts, reflecting real operational scenarios. The programme also supported LAS’s compliance with the national NHS Conflict Resolution Syllabus, providing consistency across the trust while enhancing practical skills for frontline staff.

Outcomes / Impact
The programme was extremely well received. Crews reported increased confidence when managing aggressive or distressed patients, and supervisors noted stronger situational awareness and safer on-scene decision-making. Staff highlighted that the training felt realistic and directly relevant to their work in London, enhancing the training’s impact. Today, Stand2 continues to support LAS, contributing to a safer, more consistent conflict management approach across the capital’s ambulance workforce and helping reduce risks to both staff and patients in a uniquely demanding environment.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.
