01COURSE OVERVIEW

Equipping staff to recognise protest dynamics, maintain personal safety, and make proportionate, defensible decisions in fast-moving situations.

This programme gives staff the situational awareness, communication skills, and decision-making frameworks they need to operate safely and professionally in environments affected by protest activity. Participants learn to read crowd dynamics, recognise escalation indicators, and apply structured communication strategies that reduce tension and maintain safety.

The course clarifies roles, responsibilities, and limitations – supporting staff to stay within organisational and legal boundaries under pressure. It is suitable for a wide range of civilian and corporate roles operating around nationally important assets, critical infrastructure, public-facing services, and high-profile sites.

This is not public order or enforcement training. It contains no enforcement tactics and is designed exclusively for civilian and corporate environments.

02 HOW THIS TRAINING HELPS

How this training helps your organisation

  • Improves safety and decision-making in protest-affected environments

  • Supports continuity planning and safer incident responses

03RISKS ADDRESSED

Protest activity is unpredictable by nature. Without the right preparation, your staff may:

Checklist icon Misread crowd mood, triggers, or escalation cues – and respond in ways that make situations worse
Checklist icon Take non-defensible actions that increase risk or expose your organisation to reputational damage
Checklist icon Drift outside role boundaries or policy under pressure
Checklist icon Fail to communicate effectively with the public, partners, or emergency services
Checklist icon Under-report incidents, reducing your organisation’s ability to learn and improve

The good news is that this is entirely preventable. That’s what this course is for.

04 LEARNING OUTCOMES

Here’s what your staff will be able to do differently:

Describe the legal, ethical, and organisational frameworks relevant to protest environments.

05 CASE STUDY

National Energy Network – Protecting Critical Infrastructure

Stand2 delivered Protest Management & Safety training to a major national energy provider responsible for critical infrastructure and public safety. Staff  operate across extensive networks and public facing locations where protest  activity can impact operations.

The programme focused on situational awareness, role clarity, and professional  communication that reduces escalation. Teams reported greater confidence in managing on-site interactions and improved coordination with partners to  maintain safety and continuity around nationally important assets.

06 Course Delivery & Assessment

Training that’s built around the environments your staff operate in – and the protest scenarios they may actually face.

Delivery

This course is delivered in person through structured input, practical communication exercises, and scenario-based discussion built around realistic protest environments. Every session is built around your organisation’s specific sites, operational risks, and the types of protest activity your staff may encounter. StandPoint, our online learning platform, supports the programme with additional resources and materials.

Assessment

Learning is assessed through observation, participation, scenario discussion, and reflective contribution. There are no formal written exams – assessment is continuous and based on how staff apply what they’ve learned in realistic discussion and scenario exercises.

Certification

Every participant who successfully completes the programme is formally certified by Stand2, receiving a uniquely numbered certificate that confirms they have met the programme’s assessed standards. Each delegate is entered onto the Stand2 Training Register, which we maintain on your behalf – giving your organisation a clear, auditable record of who has been trained and when refresher training is due.

Training environment

All learning is delivered using trauma-informed principles with clear consent and opt-out options throughout. The training environment is designed to be supportive and constructive — including for staff who may have anxiety about protest activity or large crowds.

How does this training differ from public order or enforcement training?
This programme is not public order training and contains no enforcement tactics. It focuses solely on personal safety, communication, proportionate decision-making, and operating within role boundaries – designed exclusively for civilian and corporate environments. Staff are not trained to manage or disperse protests — they are trained to operate safely and professionally in environments where protest activity may affect their work.
Is this course suitable for non-security staff?
Yes. This programme is designed for a wide range of operational roles – not just security teams. It is suitable for any member of staff who may encounter protest activity as part of their role, including site managers, operations teams, customer-facing staff, communications professionals, and senior leaders responsible for continuity planning.
Is protest management training a legal requirement?
Employers have a legal duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to assess and manage foreseeable risks to their staff. Where protest activity is a realistic operational risk – for organisations managing critical infrastructure, public-facing services, or high-profile sites – appropriate training is one of the most direct ways to meet that obligation and demonstrate organisational due diligence.
Will this training help us demonstrate due diligence if an incident occurs?
Yes. The programme supports clear, auditable decision-making frameworks, role clarity, and documented procedures — all of which strengthen organisational defensibility during internal or external review. Staff who have completed this training are better placed to demonstrate that their actions were proportionate, within their role boundaries, and consistent with organisational policy.
Can the training be built around our specific sites and operational risks?
Yes. Every Stand2 programme is built around your organisation’s specific sites, operational environment, and the types of protest activity your staff may encounter. Where helpful, we carry out a Training Needs Analysis beforehand to ensure the scenarios, examples, and learning activities are directly relevant to your operational context.
Can the training help staff who have anxiety about protests or large crowds?
Yes. The course provides structured approaches to situational awareness, communication, and boundary setting that help staff feel more confident and in control in protest-affected environments. All sessions are delivered using trauma-informed principles to support psychological safety – including for staff who may find protest scenarios particularly stressful.
Does the course cover interactions with activist groups, media, or members of the public?
Yes. Staff learn how to manage challenging conversations professionally, maintain neutrality, and avoid escalating situations unintentionally. The course covers communication strategies for a range of interactions – including with protesters, journalists, members of the public, and partner agencies.
Does Stand2 training come with a certificate?
Yes. Every participant who successfully completes the programme is formally certified by Stand2 and issued with a uniquely numbered completion certificate. Each delegate is also entered onto the Stand2 Training Register, which we maintain on your behalf – providing your organisation with a clear, auditable record of who has been trained and when refresher training is due.
What is the difference between this course and the Advanced Protest Management (2 Day) programme?
This one-day programme is entirely non-physical and focuses on awareness, communication, and defensible decision-making. The two-day Advanced Protest Management programme builds on this foundation and adds non-harmful physical safety options for organisations whose staff may need to use safe movement, positioning, or controlled withdrawal in exceptional circumstances. A Training Needs Analysis will help confirm which programme is most appropriate for your organisation.
How often should staff refresh this training?
Stand2 recommends a refresher interval of 24 months for this programme. The refresher course follows the same one-day format as the initial programme. Stand2 will proactively notify you when your staff are approaching their refresher date through the Stand2 Training Register.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.

The course was well organised, engaging and delivered by Chris C, who explained everything clearly using practical, real-life examples. The training has given me greater confidence in managing conflict, assessing risk, and keeping myself and others safe. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop these important skills.
