01COURSE OVERVIEW

Authorisation-based training for staff permitted to carry and deploy Defence Marker Spray – legally grounded, operationally relevant, and properly documented.

Participants examine necessity, proportionality, and post incident responsibilities, alongside communication strategies aimed at minimising the likelihood of deployment.

This module is designed for staff who are authorised – or being considered for authorisation – to carry and deploy Defence Marker Spray as part of their operational role. It is not a general conflict management module and is not suitable for staff who are not authorised to carry the product.

02 HOW THIS TRAINING HELPS

How this training helps your organisation

  • Ensures deployment is lawful, necessary, and defensible
  • Reduces medical, legal, and reputational risk
  • Strengthens pre-deployment communication and deescalation
  • Improves post incident management, documentation, and review
  • Aligns operational practice with organisational policy and audit standards

03.RISKS ADDRESSED

Deployed incorrectly or without proper training, Defence Marker Spray creates legal, reputational, and safety risks your organisation cannot afford.

Checklist icon Deploy the product in situations where use is not authorised, proportionate, or legally justifiable
Checklist icon Cause distress or harm to a third party – and be unable to demonstrate the deployment was lawful
Checklist icon Fail to complete accurate and timely post-deployment records, undermining governance and accountability
Checklist icon Carry the product without understanding the legal and policy framework that governs its use
Checklist icon Be unable to demonstrate competence if deployment is challenged by a regulator, commissioner, or court

The good news is that this is entirely preventable. That’s what this training is for.

05 CASE STUDY

City of London financial security teams

Stand2 supports specialist security teams operating within high-value financial environments where staff, client safety, and asset protection are critical to  business continuity and regulatory confidence. Given the sensitive nature of  these sites, teams work within tightly controlled access protocols, clear use-of force policies, and robust governance frameworks that require proportionate,  defensible decision-making at all times.

The module focuses on necessity and proportionality thresholds, pre-deployment communication, and safe, controlled post-incident management in line with  compliance expectations.

Classroom teaching
06 Course Delivery & Assessment

Practical, policy-aligned training – delivered to the authorisation framework your organisation operates within and the legal standards you are accountable to.

Delivery

This module is delivered in person and combines legal and policy grounding with practical application training. Instruction covers the legislative framework governing use of force and the deployment of irritant sprays in the UK, the specific legal and policy requirements for carrying and deploying Defence Marker Spray, correct deployment technique and safety procedures, post-deployment responsibilities including decontamination, aftercare, and recording requirements, and chain of custody and accountability requirements for carrying and returning the product. Training is tailored to your organisation’s specific authorisation framework and operational environment.

Assessment

Learning is assessed through practical demonstration, verbal questioning, and scenario-based application. Assessment covers both the correct technical use of the product and the legal and policy knowledge that must underpin every deployment.

Certification

Every participant who successfully completes the module is formally certified by Stand2, receiving a uniquely numbered certificate that confirms they have met the assessed standards for carrying and deploying Defence Marker Spray. Each delegate is entered onto the Stand2 Training Register, which we maintain on your behalf – giving your organisation a clear, auditable record of who is currently trained and authorised to carry the product.

Training environment

All practical elements are conducted in a controlled, safe environment with close supervision throughout. Decontamination protocols are in place for all practical exercises.

Is Defence Marker Spray legal for use in our sector?
Defence Marker Spray is legal for use in the UK when carried and deployed in line with the legal framework governing use of force and the specific authorisation framework of your organisation. Stand2 training covers the legal basis for carrying and deploying the product and the conditions under which deployment is lawful, proportionate, and justifiable. If you are unsure whether your organisation is authorised to use the product, we recommend taking legal advice before proceeding.
Who is this training for?
This training is for staff who are authorised – or being considered for authorisation – to carry and deploy Defence Marker Spray as part of their operational role. It is not suitable as a general conflict management module and should not be attended by staff who are not authorised to carry the product.
What does the training cover beyond how to use the spray?
The training covers the full legal and operational framework: when deployment is lawful and proportionate, the post-deployment responsibilities including decontamination and aftercare, recording and reporting requirements, chain of custody obligations, and the accountability framework your organisation and individual staff members are held to.
What happens after a deployment – does the training cover that?
Yes. Post-deployment responsibilities are a core part of the training. This includes immediate decontamination and aftercare for any person exposed to the product, the recording and reporting requirements your organisation must meet, and the chain of custody and accountability obligations that apply to the product itself.
Can this training be delivered alongside our Level 3 programme?
Yes. Defence Marker Spray training can be integrated into the annual Level 3 refresher cycle or delivered as a standalone specialist module, depending on your organisation’s requirements and authorisation structure.
What happens if a member of staff fails the assessment?
Any staff member who does not meet the required standard will not be certified. Stand2 will provide clear written feedback to the organisation and can arrange remedial training where appropriate. Uncertified staff should not carry the product until they have successfully completed reassessment.
How often does this training need to be refreshed?
Annual refresher training is the standard recommended by Stand2 and aligned with best practice across most sectors. Organisations should also ensure refresher training is triggered following any deployment, significant incident, policy change, or change to authorised equipment.
Does Stand2 training come with a certificate?
Yes. Every participant who successfully completes the module is formally certified by Stand2 and issued with a uniquely numbered completion certificate. Each delegate is also entered onto the Stand2 Training Register, which we maintain on your behalf – providing your organisation with a clear, auditable record of who is trained and currently certified to carry the product.

Excellent. Done a few courses over the years regarding conflict management and this was the best. Relaxed teaching and no one was afraid to make a mistake or ask any questions. Enjoyed this much more than my recent SIA renewal in all honesty.

Really thoughtful and experienced teachers. After the training I felt really confident in conflict resolution and physical intervention. Thank you now I know how to protect myself, the general public and my organisation if a situation comes up.

Very well structured course and effectively taught. Techniques and solutions were very helpful.
