The LSE is an environment where we care very greatly about the rights and freedoms and the exhibition of the proper standards of behaviour in terms of respect and courtesy to others and the idea of freedom is one that is inherent to all academic institutions, but the LSE perhaps more than others. Perhaps for that reason the behaviour of security staff always has to be at the very highest end of diplomatic and every action that they take has to be proportionate and measured because it will be examined significantly in this type of environment and quite rightly so.

We started using Stand2 some 5 years ago and I was particularly interested in the training system because it was one that emphasised conflict resolution before it got to the stage where one was having to do anything physical. But where one was doing things which were physical, the safety elements, the proportionality and the ability to deal with things in a way which would be seen to be as de-escalatory as possible was very, very important to me and it appeared that Stand2 had a coherent system; a cohesive system which allowed me to be reassured that all of those sensitivities were taken into account.

“it was a system that emphasised conflict resolution before it got to the stage where one was having to do anything physical”

I have now put all 60 of my staff through training with Stand2 and I can say that the results I see of that training have been excellent. The Stand2 system allows the guards to properly contextualise the problems, the difficulties and the challenges they are facing and make decisions about what techniques it is appropriate to use both prior to physically engaging and at the point where physical engagement has become necessary. This has been tested numerous times by my staff and we have conducted, using the Stand2 system a great many non-police arrests and never at any point have the actions of the staff been seen to be ambiguous by any of the officers who look back into those incidents where we have handed over suspects to them.

“The results I see of the training have been excellent”

In addition to that we have used the Stand2 system in dealing with problems of public order and breaches of freedom of speech at high profile events, some of which have been in front of live television and again using the system that Stand 2 have given us we have never had an instance whereby we have been the subject of criticism or complaint for the manner in which security staff members have dealt with many of these problematic circumstances. I can say also that what the Stand 2 system provides to me is the reassurance that if and when the actions of a security staff member are challenged there is a proper framework that the security staff member can use to articulate how and why they took the action that they did and we have been very grateful certainly for that help and assistance that have been provided by Stand2 in terms of the support that we get in the wake of an incident for ensuring that we can properly explain the circumstances of that incident and the actions that our staff members have taken.

I can say that with good training and the support that Stand2 provide I have found that it is a system which has worked for us, one that provides me with confidence that I can put my staff out on the street in these large public events, doing the things that I need them to do and can be confident that they will act in every case proportionately and with a logic which is inculcated into them by the system of training that Stand2 have put across. For me this is enormously reassuring.

“it is a system which has worked for us, one that provides me with confidence”

I think that there would be consensus within the LSE that this has worked for us and certainly I can have confidence in both the training system and the staff at Stand2 who I have always found to be both helpful, experienced and the type of people I can be confident in handing my staff members over into the care of…
